Belfast City to submit runway plans
02.04.08
A spokesman for the Belfast City Airport told the Belfast Telegraph that it is aiming to lodge an application to extend its runway in the ‘second quarter’ of this year. There is speculation that the application could be made as soon as next month, with the news coming at press reports suggest that the airport is for sale.
The proposal for a runway extension was first raised last October by management at the Ferrovial-owned airport. They plan to extend the runway at Sydenham from its existing length of 1,829m by 600m, which would increase the scope of the airport. Residents' groups are opposed to the expansion, but an Examination in Public in 2006 gave the green light to an increase in flights.
Ryanair, which began operations at Belfast City Airport last October, has been campaigning for an extension to the runway, saying at the time that it would not stay without an extension because its Boeing 737-800 aircraft are currently subject to restrictions on the number of passengers they can carry on take-off. The aircraft, which has 189 seats, is permitted to carry 140 passengers on departing flights, but if the runway was lengthened they would be able to carry a full passenger load.
