A man caught trying to smuggle £31,000 worth of cocaine into Northern Ireland via Belfast International Airport in a box of chocolates has been jailed for at least 18 months. Thomas Liam Mooney, 20, of Carryduff, County Down, was stopped at the airport last year after arriving on a flight from Amsterdam. Customs officers found 97 grams of cocaine concealed in 23 chocolates.
At Antrim Crown Court yesterday Mr Mooney was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, but was advised he will serve 18 months and then spend a further 2 years on custodial probation. Should he reoffend or break any conditions of his probation, he will serve a second term of 18 months.
