Aer Lingus to add more short haul planes and more bases
04.12.07
Aer Lingus is to accelerate purchase of short-haul planes as it builds a network of European bases, Bloomberg reports. The Irish airline wants more narrow bodied aircraft for routes planned over the next few years, Chief Executive Officer Dermot Mannion said in an interview in London.
Mr. Mannion said: 'The target at the initial public offering last year was to bring the short-haul fleet to 42, but I now believe we can stretch beyond that.' He said Aer Lingus will give details of its new fleet plans soon.
Aer Lingus will open a base at Belfast International Airport next Monday (December 10). It will offer flights to Amsterdam, Geneva and Barcelona, plus four more destinations by the end of February including a shuttle service to Heathrow.
The airline will have a 32-strong all-Airbus fleet by the end of this year. It needs to add more planes and more bases, Mr. Mannion said in the interview. He said: 'Opening bases outside Ireland is an important part of our strategy.'
