Cash seized at Belfast International
05.11.09
Over €50,000 was seized from a County Armagh man about to board a flight at Belfast International Airport on Monday. The man, who was bound for Barcelona, was arrested by UK Border Agency officers on suspicion of being involved in money laundering.
After questioning, the man was released on bail to report to Antrim PSNI Station in December. An application to detain the cash pending further investigation was approved un-opposed at Antrim Magistrates Court.
A Border Agency spokesman said: ‘Cash is seized if there are reasonable grounds to suspect it is the proceeds of, or is intended for use in, illegal activities. The Proceeds of Crime Act was designed to take the profit out of crime, making it harder for money to be laundered and depriving criminals of their illicit wealth. It is a vital element of UK criminal strategy.’
