Irish PM upset over lack of Irish on Aer Lingus Belfast flights
07.02.08
The Irish prime minister has criticised Aer Lingus for not making on board announcements in its native tongue on its services from Belfast International Airport.
After it was revealed that staff had been banned from using Irish during in-flight announcements, Ireland's Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, was asked for his thoughts during a debate on the subject in parliament, the BBC reports. He said Aer Lingus was still Ireland's national airline and 'a few sentences [in Irish] wouldn't hurt anyone.'
The first Aer Lingus flights from the Belfast Airport took off in December, with a Heathrow shuttle launching last month and more routes set to launch in the Spring. However, there have been reports of poor passenger numbers on the flights.
