£10m upgrade for Belfast International Airport
07.05.09
Belfast International Airport is to get a £10m investment to improve facilities. The project will include the construction of a new two-storey glass facade on the terminal, which will create space for over 20 new retail outlets. The security search area will be relocated to the departures area to speed up the time it takes passengers to get through the airport. Work will begin on the project immediately and it will be completed by the summer of 2010.
Airport managing director John Doran said the work would make the airport more user-friendly by improving the passenger flow, as well as significantly improving its retail and catering facilities. He said: ‘This new scheme will create modern, spacious and service-focused facilities designed to make Belfast International Airport easy and convenient to use.'
The project will start with the relocation of the security search area to the departures concourse, which will cut down passenger queuing. This will be followed by the construction of the two-storey glazed facade at the front of the terminal to accommodate lifts, stairs and escalators to reach the departures concourse. Then a redesign of the duty free area will create space for the 20 new retail units.
Mr Doran said the phased approach to the project meant minimum disruption for the 5 million passengers using the airport annually. He said: ‘The construction will not affect the day to day operations of the airport. We will be taking all the necessary steps to ensure that passengers are not unduly inconvenienced, even during our busiest summer months.’
