Belfast City accused of breaching flights limits
08.03.09
A campaign group has said that Belfast City Airport sold 80,000 more seats than allowed under planning agreements last year, the Belfast Telegraph reports. Belfast City Airport Watch said the airport broke the ‘seats for sale’ clause in its Planning Agreement with the Department of the Environment (DoE), but had not faced enforcement measures. The group called on Environment Minister Sammy Wilson to enforce the agreement.
Belfast City Airport Watch told the newspaper that airport chief executive Brian Ambrose told a meeting of the airport’s consultative forum last week that 80,000 more seats were sold in 2008 than permitted under the Planning Agreement. The group said that the DoE had been informed but did not take enforcement measures.
However, a spokesman for the airport denied the claim. He told the newspaper that the DoE was aware of a ‘process of adjustment’ by the airport to reschedule and limit some services so that it could meet the terms of the new agreement.
