Schools concerned about Belfast City Airport noise
08.09.08
A survey of schools under the flight path of Belfast City Airport reports disruption of classes and outdoor play. However, the airport says the report is 'scaremongering', 'highly suspect' and that it has not received complaints from any of the schools.
The research was carried out by campaign group Belfast City Airport Watch, which is calling on the Environment Minister, Sammy Wilson, to take urgent action following the results of its survey. It found that eighteen Belfast schools said that they are concerned about the impact of aircraft noise linked to Belfast City Airport.
One of the worst affected schools was Sydenham Infants' School, in east Belfast. The school's former principal, Jean Cogger, says the increasing volume of aircraft from the airport was making life 'unbearable' for both pupils and teachers at the school.
Another school principal, Ronnie Milligan of Cregagh Primary School in east Belfast, said the planes are annoying for both pupils and teachers. 30 schools said they would be concerned if the airport's proposed runway extension plan resulted in more air traffic.
However, the Chief Executive of Belfast City Airport, Brian Ambrose, said the report and comments were ‘scaremongering typical of the residents' group’, and that the airport closely monitored noise levels.
