City Airport 'expanding by stealth'
08.12.09
East Belfast PUP MLA Dawn Purvis has accused Belfast City Airport of expansion ‘by stealth’, after managers requested the removal of the two million cap on the number of seats for sale that can be offered from the airport each year.
Environment Minister Edwin Poots confirmed that City Airport had approached his department in the Assembly on Tuesday. Ms Purvis said: ‘Lifting the cap will mean more aircraft, which will further damage the quality of life of local residents.’
A spokesman for Belfast City Airport said that it was the only airport in Europe with a seats for sale restriction. A 2008 Planning Agreement stated that the Government would consider the removal of the restriction if an effective noise management system was put in place.
