Ryanair boss confident on Belfast City runway extension
10.02.09
Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary is 'fairly satisfied' the Northern Ireland Planning Service will approve proposals for a longer runway at Belfast City Airport. Speaking on a BBC Spotlight programme to be broadcast today, he said that he believes the runway will be extended, despite growing opposition to the move.
The extension is essential to Ryanair's plans for its Belfast base, as a longer runway is needed to allow the airline to fill all the seats on aircraft already being operated. It currently cannot do this because of weight restrictions on the 'short' runaway.
The extension would also allow larger aircraft to use the airport and for current aircraft to fly to continental destinations with heavier fuel and passenger loads. This would open up new holiday destinations for the budget airline, by attracting leisure business to Mediterranean destinations, Mr O'Leary said.
