Aer Lingus has celebrated the first anniversary of the establishment of its Belfast base. The Irish airline says the decision to launch flights from Belfast International Airport has been a success, with more than 750,000 flights sold in its first year.
The airline had set a target of half a million bookings and passengers carried within twelve months. The figure achieved for passengers carried was 600,000, and Aer Lingus CEO Dermot Mannion said he was very confident about the future of its operations from Northern Ireland. He said the Belfast base, which employs 100 people, had set the model for efficiency at the airline.
Mr Mannion also said the flagship Belfast - Heathrow route, in less than a year of operation, had already grabbed more than 40% of the market share from incumbent bmi. This service was already exceeding expectations and there was still room to grow, he said.
