Ryanair flight emergency caused by cleaning fluid
12.05.10
An ‘acrid smell’ that led to a Ryanair plane making a precautionary landing yesterday at Belfast City Airport was caused by chemicals used to clean the engines. And the engines had been cleaned after traces of volcanic ash had been found in them on Sunday, causing four flights from the airport to be cancelled.
The plane, one of two grounded by volcanic dust on Sunday evening, took off from Belfast City Airport bound for Stansted at 07:10 yesterday. However, it turned back when an acrid smell filled the cabin, and landed with emergency services in attendance. All 154 passengers disembarked normally and the plane is now back in service.
