Aer Lingus to hold mass meetings over strike threat
14.11.07
As reported on Monday, Aer Lingus is facing industrial action next Tuesday and Friday after the Siptu union served a strike notice in a dispute over what it says is a decision by the airline to 'unilaterally downgrade' the working conditions of its employees. The airline called mass meetings of all staff yesterday in hopes of persuading employees not to follow their unions' plans for rolling walkouts.
Dermot Mannion, chief executive of the airline, plans to address as many of its 3,700-member work force as possible in a series of meetings at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports today and tomorrow. In a statement, Aer Lingus said Mr. Mannion would 'underline the importance for the airline that all services operate as normal next week. Aer Lingus will not tolerate action that will affect its customers and sees no legitimate reason why services will not operate next week.'
Siptu, Ireland's largest union, representing about half of Aer Lingus employees, criticised the move as being designed to undermine its authority. Michael Halpenny, national industrial secretary at the union, said: He 'would do far better dealing with the concerns of the workers and negotiating with their unions.'
