Belfast City to get £6m upgrade
15.09.09
Belfast City Airport is to undergo a £6m upgrade to take account of changing consumer demand as passengers spend more time in the terminal prior to boarding flights. The improvements will see a 60% increase in shopping facilities, new drop-off and collection points outside the terminal and an increased capacity at security search.
Work on the project has already begun with the new external re-configuration of the drop off and collection area. The new development will include the relocation of the departure lounge to the first floor, whilst the retail, food and beverage offering airside will increase by 60%.
The works are in response to changing passenger behaviour. Airport chief executive, Brian Ambrose, said: ‘In the past passengers waited to the last minute before going through security to board flights. However over recent years we seen that reverse, with passengers spending more time airside before boarding their flight. So we will shortly be able to offer greater choice airside.‘
The new airside offering will include a Bushmills bar and a St George’s market themed restaurant as the airport taps into the popularity of two of Northern Ireland’s most popular visitor attractions. The terminal upgrade is due for completion in January 2010 and the airport will be taking steps to ensure the works do not affect the day to day operations of the airport.
