Belfast International on track for 6 million passengers this year

Belfast International Airport is on track to see a record of 6 million passengers pass through its terminal this year, according to John Doran, it's chief executive. He made the prediction at a Press conference held to mark the launch of Aer Lingus' Heathrow service on Monday.
Mr Doran said that, with Aer Lingus expecting to handle 500,000 people on its new nine routes from the airport, and growth from existing airlines, total passenger numbers were expected to increase from 5.25 million in 2007 to 6 million in 2008.
Over the past 5 years the number of direct services to international destinations from Belfast International had risen from just 1 - Amsterdam - to 36. But Mr Doran said that, despite this impressive growth, there is no indication that the market was reaching saturation point and that the airport could grow still further.
Passenger numbers are also increasing at local Belfast City Airport, which handled 2.2 million passengers last year. With Ryanair launching flights from the airport, it could even outstrip the growth rate at its bigger Belfast neighbour.
