Aer Lingus saw more than 250,000 passengers use its Heathrow service from Belfast International Airport in its first year of operation. The Irish airline began flying to Heathrow on January 14 last year as it launched 10 routes from its new Belfast base.
Airline corporate affairs director Enda Corneille said that Belfast International, which was Aer Lingus' first base outside the Republic, was a 'continuing success story'. He said: 'In our first year of operations we took more than 750,000 bookings, that was 50% ahead of our target, and we are well on our way to our millionth booking.'
'Today we are delighted to celebrate a quarter of a million passengers on our Heathrow route. The service is a resounding success. In just 12 months we've captured around 40% of the market from scratch.' He also revealed that the airline has seen a 'massive jump' in bookings since the beginning of the year as customers' thoughts turn to summer holidays.
