Belfast International calls for Belfast City runway inquiry
17.11.08
The boss of Belfast International Airport has called for a public inquiry into plans submitted for a runway extension at the rival Belfast city airport. John Doran also described last week's application as ‘a retrograde step’.
Belfast City Airport wants to increase the length of its runway by about a third, adding 1935ft (590m) to its current 5900ft (1800m) runway in the direction of Belfast Lough. The extension would allow planes to carry more fuel and passengers, opening up more European destinations.
Its chief executive, Brian Ambrose, said growth at both Belfast airports ‘was great news for the Northern Ireland economy’. However, Mr Doran said the application was ‘entirely incompatible with the present and future economic interests of Northern Ireland’.
