Aer Lingus strikes suspended
18.11.07
The strike action planned by Aer Lingus staff for next Tuesday and Friday has been suspended. Trade union Siptu has agreed to proposals by Irish government-appointed mediators to delay any action for two weeks to allow both sides to discuss their issues.
The dispute is over union claims that new contracts for temporary staff at the airline mean working more hours for less money. Aer Lingus management says costs cuts are needed to be cut in order to stay competitive with rivals such as Ryanair.
The National Implementation Body has proposed a freeze on changes to contracts while a new round of talks take place. As they were only due to take affect at the end of January, this should not be an issue.
Aer Lingus narrowly averted a strike by pilots recently over pay and terms at the airline's new Belfast Airport hub. Management at the airline is also in a long running dispute with staff over a cost-cutting plan and has withheld pay rises because union leaders have refused to accept reforms to work practices, particularly shift and overtime rules.
