Belfast City Airport to fine airlines for late flights
20.02.09
Belfast City Airport has announced that airlines breaking its late night curfew will face fines. The news came as it emerged there were over 500 flights after the 21:30 night time deadline last year, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
At present, flights are only allowed to operate at the airport between 06:30 and 21:30. However, figures obtained by the newspaper under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that 535 flights were recorded in and out of the airport after 21:30 in 2008, including 174 after 22:00.
Management at the airport confirmed that airlines are to be fined over late flights, as first recommended by the DoE’s Examination in Public report in 2006, with the money raised going to a Community Fund. The fining system will see airlines pay £50 for flights between 21:45 and 22:00, rising to £600 for flights after 23:00.
