Aer Lingus calls on Ryanair to sell its shares
23.08.11
The war of words between Aer Lingus and its near 30% shareholder and rival Ryanair stepped up a notch yesterday, with the flag carrier calling on its budget rival to sell its stake.
Ryanair wrote to Aer Lingus chairman Colm Barrington this week saying ‘shareholder value had been destroyed’, calling for a €110 million special dividend. Mr Barrington said: ‘One of the greatest concerns we hear from shareholders relates to Ryanair's shareholding and its impact on our options and value. We welcome statements [last week] that Ryanair would be prepared to dispose of its share in Aer Lingus.’
