Belfast operation to escape Aer Lingus pay cuts
29.08.09
Aer Lingus is to seek pay cuts from its workforce after reporting an operating loss of €93m for the first 6 months of this year. However, the cuts will not affect the airline's employees based at Belfast International Airport, where, the airline said its operation was ‘working extremely well’.
Announcing the first half losses, Aer Lingus said it was working on a restructuring plan to return the airline to profitability. But a spokesman said that the Belfast operation was competitive and profitable. Aer Lingus corporate affairs director Enda Corneille said: ‘Our base in Belfast is working extremely well. If anything, we would like our operation in the Republic to emulate the flexibilities we have in Belfast.'
‘Our operation and cost base in Belfast are closely aligned to our nearest competitor, which means we can be competitive on price and still be profitable as we showed in June, July and August. The issue for us is the Republic, where our costs are out of line with our competitors.’
