belfast castle and cave hill

Belfast Castle is one of the cities outstanding and historically significant buildings. The castle is on a prominent site 400 feet above sea level on the slopes of Cave Hill.

Belfast Castle is fairly modern, a Victorian building completed in 1870 (and renovated in 1990). Some have described it as 'self-indulgent', the large castle is built of sandstone and set in lovely gardens. The castle also offers great views over Belfast Lough and the city.

Cave Hill is a stone-age flint quarry, famous for being the site where the leaders of the United Irishmen swore defiance against the English in 1795. Cave Hill also offers magnifcent views over Belfast.
