belfast divis and the black mountain
The famous backdrop to the city of Belfast, Divis and the Black Mountain, were previously off limits because of the trouble. But they were purchased by the National Trust and opened to the general public from July 2005.
The National Trust has constructed paths, fences and signage throughout the heathland area, which offers fantastic views over Belfast and much of Northern Ireland. In addition to great views, the mountains are home to numerous species of birds and wildlife, with slopes covered by a mixture of heath, heather and bog.
The park also includes sites archaeological interest, including evidence of Neolithic and prehistoric human settlements, hut circles, a flint working site and monuments on minor summits. It is expect to become a major hill-walking facility, which will include a circular path and a longer 3 hour treck.
In case you wanted to know, Divis Mountain has a summit at 1562ft and Black Mountain a summit of 1275ft.
